NuuNest App Review

NuuNest App Review

How I kept record of everything my newborn did

See the image above? This is how I kept track of everything my newborn did during his first couple of weeks. Yes, I could have found a better way, but somehow at that time this was the best I could do.

Needless to say that keeping newborn's records is very important, especially for first-time moms. It helps you and your doctor determine if things are heading in the right direction and figure out what needs to be changed. If only it wasn't such a tedious task!

Well, guess what? Now it doesn't have to be. There is an app for that! The moment I came across NuuNest, I knew it was time to say good-bye to the old-fashioned way of keeping baby records!

NuuNest log-in page

NuuNest is a very easy-to-use application available for download from Apple/iTunes store. It is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch and optimized for iPhone 5. The cost is $2.99.

It is a very handy app, especially during the first weeks of your baby’s life, when it is the toughest to keep everything under control and not lose sanity.

Download it ahead of time and take a tour to familiarize yourself with the application. Then when the baby arrives, you'll be able to quickly put records in. It is fast and easy!

What Does NuuNest Do For You?

  • It provides baby- and mama-related information within the application, as well as links to even more info outside of the app.
  • It lets you record things like baby's weight, number of breastfeeding sessions for the day and most importantly what breast you end the session with, so that you always know which one to start with.
  • The app is conveniently divided into sections, so you always know where to go for quick answers. It doesn’t overload with information. It gives just enough to know what to do next.

Top 5 Things I Love About NuuNest:

Top 5 Things I Love About NuuNest:

>>>it is customizable

The app is a universal fit for every mom. You can customize it any way you wish, depending on whether you:

  • breastfeed, bottle-feed your milk or bottle-feed formula (you’ll make this decision when setting up your account, but can always change it in Settings)
  • have a single baby or twins (you can even add a picture of your baby or babies!)

Customize NuuNest depending on gender and number of babies
  • use metric or imperial system of measurement (grams vs. pounds, milliliters vs. ounces)

All customization is done in Settings (a button at the top right corner). You can also customize your home screen there by hiding the tabs you don't need.

>>>it is informative

There is a small section at the top of Home Screen (and in most other tabs) that contains little tips and reminders. Every day the tips are new. They are short, concise and easy to remember. Very helpful!

In addition, every tab has info section that provides important information, as well as links to even more resources. Read the basics and if one area is of a particular interest to you, follow the link to learn more.

Knowing how little time new mamas have and how easily we get overwhelmed, this app is right on target. It presents only relevant information exactly when it's needed.

Info section

Also, two Home Screen tabs “All About Baby” and “All About Mom” talk about various baby- and mom-related topics. Nothing to record there, just read and learn.

“All About Mom” section is my favorite. When the baby is born, it is usually all about his/her needs. However, this is a very stressful time for a mother too. NuuNest helps moms evaluate their condition and draws their attention to issues that need timely actions.

Reminders is another great feature. NuuNest sends you important reminders for the day. I just got my Vitamin D and feeding reminders. It is a very much-needed feature, considering all the little things we have to remember.

NuuNest's reminders

The neat thing about Vitamin D reminder is after you click on it and mark it as “gave vitamin D”, the tab is disabled for the day. So if at the end of the day you lose track of it, you can always go back and check.

>>>it is multi-functional

Besides being a great information resource, NuuNest is great for recording things like:

  • number of breastfeeding sessions for the day
  • when the last nursing happened
  • which breast was last
  • breast milk and formula supplementation amounts and times
  • baby's weight

Good To Know: You need an Internet connection to enjoy all features of the app to the fullest degree. You can read info offline, but the records are saved over the Internet.

  • number of wet and soiled diapers
  • when the last wet or soiled diaper happened
  • vitamin D intake
  • milk expression volumes and times

These are 6 tabs (located on Home Screen) where all the recording happens (click to enlarge):

>>>it is reliable

When you download the app, you will be prompted to accept terms and conditions and understandably the company wants you to read their disclaimer. It is a standard process.  As with all the information found anywhere on the web/apps, NuuNest is not a substitute for medical advice.

However, Cindy and Jana – creators of NuuNest- are Registered Nurses and International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs).

All the information presented in the app is based on their education and a combined total of 30 years of experience of being IBCLCs. NuuNest is a great reliable tool when it comes to raising red flags that you can further address with your doctor.

NuuNest is a safe place to keep all your baby records. No need to keep the paper trail. The only thing you need to make sure you do is click “save” after you enter something.

Little Extras You Are Going to Love:

*   You can create feeding reminders for both breast and bottle (in the “Breastfeed” and "Bottle Feed" tabs).

*   When you enter your baby's weight, it is saved every day (in the “Weight” tab). So there is always a way to monitor your baby’s progress.

*   NuuNest has a built-in timer. You will find it in the “Expressing Breast Milk” tab.  You can also use it to time breastfeeding sessions!

*   If you turn on “notices based on data entered” in Settings, NuuNest will notify you if there is anything to be concerned about based on the information you enter.

>>>it is easy to use

NuuNest is extremely easy to use, which is what every new mama wants. No time or energy to figure out complicated. Only easy, fast and user-friendly!

When you download NuuNest, it gives you an option to take a tour. The tour is brief and concise. It offers tutorials and app preview. This way you will know how the app works when the time comes.

At any point in the application you can log out and take the tour. Although I doubt you’ll need it. The app is very intuitive and laid out nicely.

What Can You Do With the Info Recorded In NuuNest?

Three things:

  1. You can review the information you entered in “Summary” tab.

  2. You can pull the weekly summary to monitor the progress.

  3. You can export all the data and e-mail it! Say you have a doctor’s appointment coming, go to “Summary” tab, click on a little button at the bottom left corner, enter your e-mail address, check the sections that you would like to export and voila – there you have it! Print it out and take it to your doctor.

I had a lot of fun testing the app. I am sure you will love using it. Very user-friendly and easy to navigate. Makes life of a new parent (dad's too!) a LOT easier!
